The Cat in the Hat turns 50!

Posted by Sandy in Community

I’m sure that everyone remembers their first Dr. Seuss book. Mine was Hop on Pop and it was the first book that I ever read. I can still conjure up the feeling of sitting in my parents living room – in a green chair – and knowing the joy of being able to read all by myself.

[inspic=149,right,fullscreen,150]This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Cat in the Hat and to celebrate, the National Education Association is throwing a huge party for the Cat. Libraries are hosting readings as are bookstores and community centers. You can join in the fun by reading some Seuss to those around you.

You can also participate by sending the Cat a birthday card. Not only is it fun, but for every card that is received, one book is donated by Random House Children’s Books to First Book. This is a national nonprofit with a single mission: to give children from low-income families the opportunity to read and own their first new books.

I would personally like to thank Kathy Sheppard for lending me her Cat in the Hat costume (hat, bow tie, and gloves) and Nancy for giving me the most marvy Thing One and Thing Two t-shirt for story hour at Morton Memorial Library. So we had bad weather and I ended up reading only to an appreciative audience of one – Joanne Meyer – our library director, it was still fun and I would encourage all to participate in their own fashion.

To quote the great master, “Oh the stuff you will learn! The most wonderful stuff!

Happy Valentine’s Day Blizzard!!!!

Posted by Sandy in Personal

Wow, now that’s some snow out there! To see the photo that sums up today check out Gabe’s new blog photo site – too keen for words.

Hope that everyone was able to enjoy the snow: without too much care or shoveling. I was lucky enough to have an entire day of Rhinecliff related work and so was able to trudge to and fro with much happiness.

Happy happy Valentine’s Day to all: “will you be mine”, “my heart beets for you”, “lettuce be Valentines”, and “do you carrot all for me”.

68 degrees in January

Posted by Sandy in Personal

Today was a true gem of a day! Well intentioned plans to do anything productive indoors were quickly thrown aside as soon as the clouds passed and the sun shone like May.
Sean and I brought Stella out for her 2007 debut which was just so marvy – and here we thought we wouldn’t see her til March, if the groundhog saw his shadow.

We were lucky enough to catch Jamie and Christy on Rusty Trawler and meet up for a little two wheeling action. How could we not – how often do you get 68 degrees in Jan (71 in Brooklyn where local restaurants fired up there outdoor barbeques), honestly, I was out in just a blouse and jeans and saw others in shorts and tank tops.
It would have been wrong to not pay homage to this gorgeous day – even with the knowledge that we, not Mother Nature, were responsible for the global warming that caused it.
So happy new year to all and may there be many more bits of loveliness for everyone to enjoy.

As an aside, we scooted to the Rhinebeck Deli where we ordered Sean’s specialty sandwich: plain bun, peppered turkey, swiss, bacon, mayo, tomato, lettuce, salt & pepper, oil & vinegar, and hot sauce. This is truly an amazing sandwich and everyone who tries one is an instant convert.

Our “Movie Star”

Posted by Sandy in Personal

First a happy new year to all and I hope that everyone is having a lovely holiday season.

Now the subject that has gotten me to get back to blogging: Gabriel Biderman. Some may know him as Nancy’s husband, or my brother-in-law, photographer extraordinary, or that B&H guy, but did you know that he is also quite the thespian.
Feel free to check out his name on imdb gallery (though check out his movie at your own risk). But for the true Gabe and B&H experience, check out this interview below with Scott Kelby of Photoshop TV.
Those of you who know B&H will feel right at home and those who have never visited will be treated to a new level of shopping. (sorry, video may take a couple of minutes to fully load.)
Best wishes and yes, one of my new year’s resolutions is to be better about my blogging.

Tis the season

Posted by Sandy in Personal

Yes, the season when I procrastinate more than usual!
Actually, I’d like to wish everyone a lovely holiday season. This fall has been a tough one for many of us but we are so thankful for all of our family/friends who make life such a joy.

And speaking of joy, I’m about to start truffle season at 7 Grinnell. If anyone would be interested in sending chocolate truffles to friends, family, or coworkers, I’m working on my count right now. I’m sticking with the Cocktails at Five theme but this year there will be 8 truffles per box.

Max : 1997 ~ October 24, 2006

Posted by Sandy in Personal

maxLast night we lost a beloved member of our Rhinecliff family. Max was taking the evening breezes of Shatzell Avenue when he was hit by a driver leaving the train station.

While we all grieve for our loss and send our deepest sympathy to Stacey, we remember Max for his joie de vivre.

Everyone has their own story of meeting Max but Sean met him while working with Sue at Sie Designs. Office Max was the one often found lounging on the desks if his usual chair was otherwise occupied.

I first became acquainted with Max when the jingle of his collar and tag announced the arrival of an exceedingly handsome striped cat wandering down Grinnell. He kept me company as I gardened and then tried to follow me inside. He did not become adopted by us until Stacey was stranded in Boston during an ice storm and we couldn’t say no to the tap tap tapping at our door. So, there and then he started a friendship with our cats and consequently our friendship with Stacey.

Max continued his benevolent reign of Rhinecliff hitting all parties (more pettings), heading down to China Rose for drinks, keeping an eye on the architecture biz, and making himself at home with Freddy for Christmas evenings. Stacey graciously allowed Max the run of the neighborhood and didn’t seem to mind that we now counted him as our half cat. He spent Thanksgivings with us celebrating, afternoons working on computers with Sean and then evenings on our couch watching television with Koia and Frances, sometimes we would have sleepovers with Max usually heading home around 6 in the morning. Yes, Max was even on our holiday card last year as part of the family.

I think in the back of everyone’s mind was the concern for the many cars that speed through Rhinecliff, but Max was a man about town and we all knew to keep an eye out for him as he would saunter the streets. Rhinecliff is the place to live if you’re a cat – food at every doorstep, people to cater to your whims and needs, and lots of adoring fans. Unfortunately everyone doesn’t share the same sensibilities and care and so we count the number of beloved pets who have perished at the wheels of speeding vehicles.

Thank you Max for making our lives much happier, you are missed so very much!

I realize that there are so many Max stories that keep coming to mind, stories that aren’t special except to us: Max being territorial about “other cats” that dared to visit our property, Max wanting to come in but being frightened of the Queen Anne’s Lace, the way he announced himself by padding at our front and then back doors to make sure that we had heard him, Max taking a walk all around the neighborhood with us, and once all the way to the dock and back, when Gabe & Nancy heard that he would be visiting his grandparents for the summer and missing their wedding, Gabe’s first words were, “but I had khakis and a linen shirt all set for him to wear”. Max flirted with everyone and had the ability to make everyone feel like he had a special place in his heart for only him or her.

Please feel free to share any and all Max memories; doing so will keep him close.

Stacey is asking that anyone interested in making donations do so to Animalkind, Inc. or to the SPCA of Dutchess or Ulster. There will be a memorial service for Max and I will let you know when Stacey has a date for the gathering. In the meantime, click here or on Max’s pic to view a slideshow.

Friday the 13th – almost always a lovely day – for raves & rants

Posted by Sandy in Personal

Since writing my last post, I have contemplated writing many times but other things have taken precedence; not sure what they were but I’m sure they were terribly important.

For instance, Nan & Gabe got married, went on a honeymoon, and are now settling in happily to married life. Honey, our ’66 Corvair is back home after receiving a gorgeous paint job. Jamie & Christy have welcomed Rusty Trawler – a ’76 BMW motorcycle – into their lives even as they plan their upcoming nuptials. And most recently we all are celebrating the birth of [mypicref=145]Paige Ellyn Sheppard[/mypicref].

Unfortunately, though we have been loving the joys of scootering around Rhinecliff (and even going as far as the Country Inn in Krumville), we have been somewhat disappointed in the performance of Stella. Since getting her in April, we have been stranded in the Rondout and Port Ewen on a Friday evening, and unable to get out of our driveway on several occasions. After many expletives and phone conversations, Sean had to spend a day in Connecticut at the dealership, Scooter Centrale, having her “fixed”, where they also performed & charged for an unauthorized 500 mile service on the scooter. This was made all the more irritating by the fact that the odometer has been faulty from day one and registering more miles than traveled by approximately 20%, it hadn’t actually reached 500 miles yet. Two weeks later… same problem. After another discussion on the phone and having a piece ordered (the reason for buying a new scooter was so that Sean did not have to work on it) we thought we were good to go. Stella was a trouper for another 2 weeks and then after some sputters and less than “stell(er)” performance, we called Scooter Centrale again and requested a pickup for servicing. We really missed having her for the past 2 weeks of lovely scooting weather, only to be told on her very expensive return that the problem was something they used to see a lot… and yet missed at her first 6 hour visit to Scooter Centrale.

Scooters rock, the gas mileage is phenom, we really encourage others to try out the 2 wheeling fun and we adore Stella but will be looking for a new place for servicing.

On a happier note, don’t forget about the Morton Memorial Library Book Sale (etc.) on October 28th and 29th.

in local news: don’t forget to check out www.rhinecliff.org for all updates about all that is rhinecliff. there are also petitions circulating to get proposition 414 on the ballot in november – if this is important to you, sign.

personally/scooterly: sean & i have been having a blast on stella – after my first spectacular drive/crash i have remained a passenger (trying to keep bruising down to a minimum for the upcoming wedding). tonight we drove her to pick up a pizza and then a milkshake from del’s, yes, you can carry 2 adults and a dinner on stella and all make it home safely.

and finally the upcoming nuptials of nancy and gabe: all of our love and best wishes to two of our favorite people in the world.

She’s here!

Posted by Sandy in Personal

Friday 3:25pm EST, we are the proud (if that descibes the ecstatic, breath holding, love affair that we have after only seeing her once in the shop) owners of our very own Stella Mobilette. She arrived in a bit of a downpour, but not enough of one to stop us from taking a few shots as she rolled off of the truck – ok and a few more with my helmet on.

Joanne was kind enough to let me run skipping from the library to greet Stella, despite the fact that she had just rolled up with a brand new blue kayak on the top of her car – Happy Graduation from Richard. Rhinecliff is set to take the world by storm – by land or sea/river.

Couldn’t write yesterday, way too busy, well just admiring her, as our neighbors will attest. We did finally start her up and Sean took Nancy and I for a few spins around the neighborhood – video and still shots to follow. Stella Mobilette is even keener than we thought she’d be. Thanks for all of the well wishing from friends and family. Just letting everyone know that if you see us zipping along and we don’t appear to acknowledge you, it’s just that we’re afraid to shift too much and go crashing out of control!

Yes, we’re completely in love!

New addition to our family!

Posted by Sandy in Personal

After almost a year of pondering, we finally gave in and accepted that we had been seduced by more than Stella’s promise of 90 miles per gallon – we thought that she was cute!

Sean and I are the proud owners (or will be as soon as our new mobilette arrives) of a tangerine Stella scooter. We decided that we could no longer justify the gas costs just to drive into Rhinebeck to go to a town meeting, or to bop to the movies. (We haven’t gone overly politically correct, we do still have the Kia and will probably squabble over who gets to drive the car on cold rainy days).

A big thank you to Julie at Scooter Centrale in Plainville, CT. They have a lovely showroom with people who seem to care equally about scooters and customers.

More info to follow with pictures of our new family member as soon as the big day arrives.
